Ferrol
A coastal municipality in the Ferrol comarca. Known for Castelo de San Felipe.
The comarca's largest city, a child of the Enlightenment and the sea. Its 18th-century Arsenal is the only Enlightenment naval harbour still intact and active in all Europe, and it defines a city of naval tradition, with the Magdalena quarter — the «chocolate bar» — a Holy Week of International Tourist Interest, and the Meninas de Canido. In 1800 it repelled a British landing at the heights of Brión. All overlooking one of Europe's finest natural harbours, with beaches like Doniños and San Xurxo close by. The origin of the name Ferrol is debated: the most repeated explanation links it to an old lighthouse or lantern (faro/farol) that marked the harbour mouth — hence nearby Montefaro.

Around 19 March (St Joseph's), Ferrol fills with music: the <b>roldas</b> (singing groups) parade through the streets, with an act at the Teatro Jofre and open-air performances. A Galician Festival of Tourist Interest.

Declared of International Tourist Interest: brotherhood processions through the Magdalena quarter (March or April).
Romaría de Chamorro
