Cabo Prior / Punta Frouxeira
A stunning clifftop viewpoint overlooking the Ría de Ferrol and the open Atlantic. Popular for sunsets and whale watching. The Serra da Capelada cliffs nearby rise 600 metres vertically above the sea—the highest sea cliffs in the Iberian Peninsula.
A wild cape jutting into the Atlantic. Beside its lighthouse stand the military batteries that defended Ferrol: in the 20th century the 38 cm Vickers guns were installed here, able to hurl 800 kg shells up to 35 km. They were dismantled in the 1990s, but the huge gun pits, tunnels and buildings remain, amid cliffs and wild beaches. They were part of the Ártabro Gulf defence system planned under the 1926 Plan, together with the Monte Campelo and Monte San Pedro batteries.
