Ferrolterra guide: what's on, beaches, trails and sights

Water sports: surf, sailing & kayak

With miles of Atlantic beaches, a sheltered ría and the river Eume, Ferrolterra is a playground for watersports. Here's where to learn and practise, with local schools and clubs.

Surf

Ferrolterra is surf country. Pantín (Valdoviño) is world-famous — it hosts the Pantín Classic on the world tour — and Doniños, San Xurxo and A Frouxeira offer waves for every level. To start with certified instructors: Valdo Surf School (Doniños). Pantín also has surf schools in season.

Sailing

The sheltered ría is ideal for learning to sail. The Club Náutico de Ares runs dinghy sailing courses (from age 8) and cruising courses. For recreational boating licences, Ferrol has Dunasport; professional maritime training is at the Escola Náutico-Pesqueira de Ferrol.

Kayak & canoeing

The river Eume, the Fragas and the ría are perfect for kayaking. In Cabanas, Club Cabanas KDM offers summer courses and flat-water paddling; in Pontedeume, Club Náutico Firrete (since 1967) runs trips on the river Eume and the Ares ría; and Fragas do Eume Kayak offers guided paddles through the natural park.
