When to come

Summer (June–September): beach and festa season, the warmest weather and also the busiest. Big dates include the Ortigueira Festival (Celtic music, July) and the Pantín Classic surf contest (August–September).

Spring and autumn: mild, green and quieter. The best time to walk the Fragas do Eume or the coast. Autumn brings the magostos and chestnuts.

Winter: the Atlantic turns wild — storms and big swell — and it's the season for seafood and Entroido (Carnival). Time for indoor and town plans.

How to get here

By car: the AP-9 motorway links Ferrol with A Coruña (about 40 min), Santiago (just over 1 h) and Vigo; the AG-64 connects to the A-6 towards Lugo and Madrid.

By train: the Renfe Ferrol–A Coruña line, with connections to the rest of Spain from A Coruña, plus the metric-gauge train towards Ortigueira and the Cantabrian coast.

By air: the nearest airports are A Coruña–Alvedro (about 40 min) and Santiago–Rosalía de Castro (just over 1 h), with domestic and European flights.

By bus: interurban lines across the region (bus.gal).

How long to stay & what to prioritise

1 day — Ferrol and its ría: the Magdalena quarter (Enlightenment town planning), the Castelo de San Felipe, a beach (Doniños or San Xurxo) and sunset at Cabo Prior.

2 days — add nature: the Fragas do Eume and the Caaveiro monastery, with a stop in Pontedeume (Torreón dos Andrade).

3 days — the wild north: Cabo Ortegal, San Andrés de Teixido, the cliffs of the Serra da Capelada and Ortigueira.

Getting around

The region is rural and spread out: a car is the easiest way to reach the beaches, capes and villages, though distances are short. Public transport between villages is limited. In and around Ferrol, the town bus and the ría promenade do the job.

Good to know before you go

Check the weather and warnings before a hike or a beach day: on the coast the day's flag rules and the sea deserves respect. In summer (July–September) wildfire risk is high and fires are banned. In the bathing season, dogs are restricted on many beaches.
