Ares
A coastal municipality in the Ferrol comarca. Known for Montefaro.
A seaside town on the Ares ría, with white houses and sheltered beaches like Chanteiro. It celebrates its Sea Festival and its patron, San Roque, in August, and keeps the tradition of the historic Voto de Chanteiro. It holds corners such as the picturesque seafaring village of Redes and, atop the peninsula, the convent of Santa Catalina de Montefaro, founded in 1393 by Fernán Pérez de Andrade.

Romaría do Voto de Chanteiro
One of Ferrolterra's most traditional pilgrimages, at the <b>hermitage of Nosa Señora do Porto de Chanteiro</b> (Ares). Tradition holds that in <b>1404</b> the people of <b>Ares and Mugardos</b> begged the Virgin to spare them from a plague and vowed to offer her six pounds of wax each year: the famous <b>Voto de Chanteiro</b>, still renewed by both towns. Held at <b>Pentecost</b> (movable date), with Mass, bagpipes and empanada.
