Mosteiro de Monfero
A fascinating monastery with an enigmatic checkered façade, hidden in the hills of Monfero. Founded in the 12th century, its unique dameroso (chequerboard) stonework makes it one of the most unusual monasteries in Galicia.
The monastery of Santa María de Monfero is striking for its chequered façade of alternating granite and slate. Founded by Benedictines in 1135 and Cistercian from 1201, little of the original Romanesque survives: today's church is a great 17th-century Baroque work. It hides in a wooded inland valley, within the Fragas do Eume area.
