Holy Week in Ferrol
International Tourist Interest
Ferrol's Holy Week has been a Festival of International Tourist Interest since 2014 (national since 1995). Its first documentary reference dates from 1616: over 400 years of living history.
A character of its own
Its distinctiveness comes from the naval city: the tradition took shape with people who came from all over Spain to work in the shipyards and the Navy, blending styles and ways of living the Passion. The result is a Holy Week unlike any other.
Processions and big days
From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, some 25 processions take to the streets, run by five brotherhoods. The busiest days are Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, through the Esteiro and A Magdalena neighbourhoods.
The cofrade route: churches all year
You don't have to wait for Holy Week. The Ferrol Cofrade route takes in the town-centre churches tied to the processions: the Concathedral of San Xiao, the Dolores parish, the Angustias sanctuary, the Mercé chapel and that of the Venerable Third Order of St Francis. They keep historic images, such as the Ecce Homo by Florencio Gambino (1790), still carried in procession, and the Virxe da Mercé (1811) by José Ferreiro.
