Fishing & shellfishing
River fishing (freshwater)
To fish in rivers, reservoirs and streams you need the Xunta's freshwater fishing licence. There are free stretches and preserves (coutos) needing an extra permit, plus closed seasons and minimum sizes by species. Trout and salmon have a season.
Sea fishing (recreational)
For recreational sea fishing (from shore, boat or spearfishing) you need the Consellería do Mar licence. Catch limits and minimum sizes apply.
Shellfishing on foot (recreational)
Gathering shellfish on foot for your own use needs the recreational shellfishing permit and respect for sizes, daily limits and authorized areas. Never gather in areas closed for health reasons.
Responsible fishing
Respect minimum sizes and closed seasons, release what you won't eat, and never fish in protected areas or ones closed for health reasons. Caring for the river and the ría keeps the fishing alive for tomorrow.
And never release or move fish from one river to another: invasive alien species are one of the greatest threats to Galician rivers.Licences & rules
Seasons, sizes and limits change every year: always check the current official rules before you go.
