Animals: shelters & pets
Adopt, don't buy
The comarca has shelters finding homes for hundreds of animals every year. Adopting gives a second chance and usually comes with the animal already chipped, vaccinated and dewormed.
Shelters & rescues
Some active in Ferrolterra: Refuxio de Mougá (Ferrol), TerraCan and Arco da Vella. Many run through their social media — search by name to get in touch or help as a volunteer or foster home.
🆘 Found a lost or abandoned animal?
Collecting abandoned animals is the council's responsibility. Call the local police (092), the Guardia Civil (062) or your town hall. If it has a microchip, they can trace the owner.
Owning a pet: duties
In Galicia dogs must be microchipped and registered (recommended for cats and ferrets too). Registration is done through your vet in the REGIAC. Many councils also keep a municipal census.
Responsible ownership
Owning an animal is a commitment: keep vaccinations and worming up to date, never abandon, and neuter to avoid unwanted litters. Remember that on most beaches dogs are banned or restricted during the bathing season.
