Total solar eclipse in Ferrolterra — 12 August 2026

On 12 August 2026 a total solar eclipse will cross Galicia — the first visible from mainland Spain in over a century. Ferrolterra, with its Atlantic horizon open to the west, is one of the best places in the country to experience it.

Timing (A Coruña reference, IGN source)

The partial phase begins at 19:31. The maximum — totality, day turned to night — arrives around 20:28 and lasts about 76 seconds. The partial phase ends at 21:22, with the sun about to set.

Where to watch in Ferrolterra

The sun will be very low (about 10-12° above the horizon), so you need a clear western horizon — exactly what this coast offers. Arrive early: it will be busy.

Safety

Always use certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) during the partial phases. Only during the brief seconds of totality is it safe to look with the naked eye. Sunglasses, X-ray film and home-made filters are not safe.
